Ross grew up in Dalby in a large family that started in the timber and construction industry in the late 1940’s. Ross’ dad cut his teeth in the Sawmilling industry as a young man and became one of the largest suppliers of cypress pine in QLD through natural forest harvesting. He also began to branch out into the housing industry and in the eighty’s began doing commercial buildings as well as land developments.

Ross began his apprenticeship in 1980 in the family business and during the 4th year of his apprenticeship was promoted to leading a carpentry crew in building new houses and units in the Dalby and surrounding areas. He also did renovations , extensions, sheds and worked on commercial buildings and units.

In 1987 he and his wife Sandy and 3 children moved to outback NSW (Bourke) for 9 years where they lived in a Christian community and worked on a large cotton farm that was in an extensive development mode. This was an invaluable experience in learning to apply one’s Christianity into the work-a-day world where the rubber meets the road.

Here we grew in our love for people and industry development. Ross gained experience in the operation of heavy machinery, building irrigation channels, headwalls, sheds, houses, maintenance, running water and drainage for a community of about 200 people.

In 1999 they moved to Toowoomba where Ross worked for the West Toowoomba Presbyterian church for 3 years and their children settled into schooling. During this time Ross was involved in the planning and construction of the new West Toowoomba Presbyterian Church building on South St as well as building his own home.

In 2002 Ross went back full time on the tools working with his brother and other Toowoomba builders building homes, units, and commercial buildings.

In recent times we have decided to focus purely on residential work in the Toowoomba and surrounding areas as we really enjoy that type of work, as well as working with people. We get a kick out of building people’s dreams and journeying that through with them, believing all the time that people are more important than money and things. We have a passion to train young guys in the building trade helping them to not just be good builders, but to become better people. Ross has trained his own son Michael who is a tradesmen and our on site supervisor, as well as many other young guys including Josh & Ryan who both still currently work for us.

Ross visits or is working on the job site every day, and is committed to open communication with clients at all times to ensure you get good service and quality work.

We are committed to excellence in building and service and we do want you to enjoy your building experience. Feel free to contact us for a free no obligation quote.

Q What we do?

We provide a complete service for all forms of residential construction. New homes and units, brick or timber, modern or colonial; on piers with timber floor; slab on ground or suspended. We build extensions, renovations, decks, carports, bathrooms, kitchens, retainers and paving. We have built many homes on volatile soils with all timber construction including exposed timber ceilings and polished timber floors.

Q What people say about us?

We recognise that residential building is a specialized field that requires more than just good; building; skills. Construction processes require a wide range of skills that includes good organisational abilities, good communication skills, and a high ability to deal and work with all types of people. At Ross Turner Building we have worked hard at developing these skills over many years through a wide variety of experiences.

Q If I want to build a new home or renovation – where is the right place to start?

Three obvious places would be by contacting a builder, an architect or building designer, and visiting a display village. At Ross Turner Building and Design we can cover all bases. We are licensed building designers as well as builders who will take you through the whole journey from start to finish – we are a one stop shop.

Q How do I know who are the “dodgy brothers” or the “rip off merchants?

A really important question! Most people’s home is the largest investment they will make in their lives – you have to trust your builder. Our Tips: Talk to people who have built before Check and see if the builder is a part of an accredited building organisation like Master Builders Check their license history And ask if they are happy for you to talk to people they are currently building for At Ross Turner Building we pride ourselves on “excellence in building and service”.

Q Am I better off going with one of the larger “project builders” .i.e. those with display homes who do many homes at one time – or do I go with a smaller local builder?

There is a huge difference between the two experiences. If you want the cheapest product you can get, & don’t really want to be involved too much in the journey – choose a project builder. Beware though price is far from everything & you may just get what you pay for! We only take on one major project at a time to give our absolute & best focus to that client. We employ permanent tradesmen & reliable subcontractors. You also maybe surprised how competitive our prices are!

Q How do I compare “apples with apples”?

Price is powerful – when it comes to consumers – we all want a bargain. But the saying “you get what you pay for” is true. The line will be that “we have better buying power”. Having been in this industry for over 35 years& having worked for large builders as well as small, I’ve learned suppliers have to give the same prices to the smaller guys as the big guys, otherwise they lose their business. Make sure you get a clear specifications list of what type of inclusions are going into your home.

Q What about “green homes” and the energy efficiency factors?

It’s important to build a smart home! Energy efficiency is a contemporary hot potato - who doesn’t want a greener planet & a home that costs less to run? Like all things, there is a balance. There is a basic requirement for energy efficiency within the Australian Building Code or the extreme of an off the grid & self-sustainable home. Everything comes at a price. This is where our design skills allow us to advise on the best way to achieve the level of efficiency you desire within your budget.

Q What are the most important things to consider when thinking about building a new home or renovation?

1/ Your lifestyle – where you want to live & what do you want to do in your home 2/ Your tastes – what types of styles do you like? Starting a Pinterest page is a good idea – any time you see something you like – pin it. Take photos of local houses you like too. 3/ Your block of land – location, street scape, natural features, views, slopes to mention a few. 4/ Your budget – at Ross Turner Building our goal is always – to get a hold of your dream and then to design and build to your budget.

Q Do I go to the bank or the builder first? What are my best options to finance our project?

An initial visit to your financial advisor & bank is a wise way to go. Get an idea of how much you are likely to be able to borrow & finance is really important. Shop around and find the best deal Have a plan B – that is almost as good as plan A – plan for a rainy day! Then visit your builder – it’s important to communicate roughly what you would like your spend to be. Otherwise the design brief can be a waste of money if it’s outside your budget constraints.

Q Why should we build with Ross Turner Building and Design?

We believe we are excellent value for money with decades of experience & know how to guide you through the whole journey. OUR GOAL – for you to “enjoy your building experience” & be thrilled with your new home. OUR FOCUS – to listen to your dreams & desires, & create something unique & special. OUR APPROACH – personal with great communication. OUR ACHIEVEMENTS – 35 years of experience & multiple regional & state building awards. OUR SKILLS – we can complete all aspects from design to handover.
